Saturday, November 29, 2008 Win Animal Rights activists gathered for the second day in a row to name and shame fur sellers and fur wearers on New York City’s Madison Avenue. A late addition to the schedule came, when activists were alerted to the fact that Peta was holding a protest at Donna Karan, which sits right beside MaxMara, the first target of WAR’s Fur Free Saturday. Activists who wished to join the demonstration were forced to stand within a barricaded pen constructed in the first lane of traffic on Madison Avenue. Activists quietly held signs and distributed literature. When the protest was over, police attempted to force protesters to hold the MaxMara protest from the pen constructed in front of Donna Karan. Protesters proceeded to demonstrate in the unpenned area in front of MaxMara until police decided to relocate the pen to the front of MaxMara store. When they did so, activists decided to leave MaxMara for other more accessible Madison Avenue targets. A short three blocks south of MaxMara, activists found themselves in front of Dennis Basso’c Fur Store. As always, the vulgar and gaudy displays of fur coupled with the smarmy and immature antics of the Basso employees make this a favorite protest location. Most of Basso’s worker bees know that only bad can come of taunting protesters. WAR has been known to return there 3 times in one day. A new security goon at Basso’s door seems not to have gotten the message as he spent all of his time making lewd, obscene and even threatening gestures at the protesters. Apparently he thinks it is amusing to simulate masturbation and oral sex. This is the same sleaze bag that had to be spoken to by the police, on a previous occasion, for putting his hands on a young female protester and ripping flyers out of her hand. Protests were held at the following: Donna Karan Traveling south on Madison Avenue, protesters were astounded to find yet another fur scum designer just a short way from Dennis Basso. J. Mendel has long made a “killing” on all manner of fur products. Sure enough their display window was loaded with the pelts of dead animals including chinchilla and silver fox. Once again the posters were held high for all to see and much to the consternation of the Manager of J. Mendel, a loud and highly spirited protest was held. During the protest a mother with her two young daughters passed the protest line on the way to the movies. The mother explained to her daughters why activists were yelling and holding signs showing the bloody remains of skinned animals. They were so moved that all three picked up posters and joined the protest!
